The Fire Department protects our community by monitoring, inspecting, and pre-planning hazardous materials facilities in our city.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department is our Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA) responsible for all six program elements of the Unified Program within our jurisdiction. The Unified Program consolidates, coordinates, and makes consistent the following hazardous materials and hazardous waste programs (program elements):
Hazardous Waste Generation (including onsite treatment under Tiered Permitting)
Aboveground Petroleum Storage Tanks (only the Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan or SPCC)
Underground Storage Tanks (USTs) (handled by LACO Public Works)
Hazardous Material Release Response Plans and Inventories
California Accidental Release Prevention Program (Cal ARP)
Uniform Fire Code Hazardous Material Management Plans and Inventories
Permits are required for any business which handles or stores hazardous materials and any business which generates, stores, or greats hazardous wastes.
